Karl-Heinz Rummenigge
Austria v West Germany
Argentina 1978 | Group A
Estadio Olimpico Chateau Carreras, Cordoba
It’s known to Austrians as ‘The Miracle of Cordoba’, but it began with a miraculous West German goal.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge collected the ball in his own half and carried it into the opposition’s. The 22-year-old then played a one-two with Dieter Muller to break away from two opponents, then another to escape another two, before stroking it past goalkeeper Friedrich Koncilia and into the bottom corner.
West Germany ultimately lost 3-2 in what they labelled ‘The Disgrace of Cordoba’, but the opener from ‘King Kalle’ went down in history. It remains the only goal ever scored in the competition following back-to-back one-twos between the same players.
