World Cup wonder goals: Njanka goes solo in Toulouse

38 days to go…

We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.

Pierre Njanka

Cameroon v Austria
France 1998 | Group B
Stade Municipal, Toulouse

“It wasn’t the plan,” admitted Pierre Njanka, laughing. “I started running and was looking to pass to a team-mate, but everyone was marked, so I just kept going.”

The Cameroon left-back had picked up possession in his own half and set off. Speed got Njanka away from Dietmar Kuhbauer. He then evaded a sliding Wolfgang Feiersinger, cut inside Peter Schottel and slammed the ball into the back of Michael Konsel’s net.

“It was a great goal,” Njanka continued. “I wish it could have got us more than a draw, but it’s a wonderful memory.”
