World Cup wonder goals: Robben’s supersonic sprint

58 days to go…

We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.

Dutch history was made at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Churandy Martina ran the 100 metres in 9.91 seconds to finish ahead of former world-record holder Asafa Powell, qualify for the London 2012 final, and become the third-fastest European ever behind Linford Christie and Francis Obikwelu.

Another supersonic sprint got the vermilion red, white and cobalt blue flags waving frantically at sport’s next titanic event. Arjen Robben was 78 yards from goal when he looked up and saw Wesley Sneijder, not far outside his own penalty area, readying to unleash one of his trademark through-balls.

Robben set off. The 30-year-old winger reached a mind-blowing top speed of 37 km/h and beat Sergio Ramos to the adidas Brazuca, dummied Iker Casillas to his knees, and fizzed it home.

It aided one of the most shocking scores – and decorated one of the greatest individual displays – in World Cup history as Robben inspired his side to a 5-1 victory.
