We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.
Marco Tardelli
Italy v West Germany
Spain 1982 | Final
Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid
‘The Tardelli Scream’ is widely regarded as one of the most iconic celebrations in World Cup history. The goal that provoked it was also unforgettable.
Paolo Rossi, who had broken the deadlock, chased back and dispossessed Paul Breitner. Then, a move involving Gaetano Scirea, Bruno Conti, Rossi and Giuseppe Bergomi culminated with Tardelli taking a touch and, off balance from the edge of the box, half-volleying the adidas Tango España into the bottom corner of Toni Schumacher’s net.
“Scoring in the World Cup final was the ultimate euphoria,” said the midfielder. “It was something I dreamed about as a kid. When it happened, it was indescribable.
“My kids have given me a lot of joy over the years, but nothing compares to that moment. In sport or in life, it’s the ultimate joy.
“My celebration was a release. It was spontaneous. I went crazy. I was born with that scream inside me.”
