Why Diomande could be a World Cup sensation

Born in the suburbs of Abidjan, Diomande has come a long way, both literally and figuratively. The live-wire wide man has well and truly been forced to earn his corn since taking his first steps in the game at the Académie Inter Foot Sud Comoé – where he admits to having occasionally pinched cobs from the surrounding maize fields – and is now part of a crop of exciting players hoping to steal the headlines at the World Cup.

Given his hard-fought path to the top, it takes a lot to faze the flanker, who possesses a potent blend of flamboyance and ruthlessness and is in his element whichever side of the pitch he lines up on.

One thing that will certainly not daunt Diomande is the trip to North America for the global showpiece, given that he spent several years honing his trade at schools in Florida and subsequently had trials with Major League Soccer outfits Colorado Rapids and Charlotte FC. His next destination was Europe, where a number of clubs –Premier League trio Bournemouth, Chelsea and Crystal Palace chief among them – ran the rule over him.

It was in Spain that the youngster would eventually sign his first professional contract, however, having joined Leganes in January last year after putting pen to paper in November 2024.

Diomande had to wait until the end of March for his La Liga bow, a run-out as a substitute in the 3-2 defeat to none other than Real Madrid, with the rookie relishing getting to swap shirts with Kylian Mbappe – one of his idols – after the encounter. “He’s one of the best players in the world and I’m a huge admirer of his. Playing against him was a dream come true,” the fresh-faced ace later enthused.

The audacious attacker went on to impress to such an extent in the remainder of the campaign that Leipzig duly pounced to snap him up last July. Diomande has repaid the German side’s faith in spades, progressing in leaps and bounds and enjoying an electric debut season at the club, amassing 22 goal contributions in his first 33 matches.

The rising star also hit the ground running afterr being handed his maiden senior international call-up for Côte d’Ivoire, scoring in each of his first two outings and earning a place in the squad for the recent CAF Africa Cup of Nations. Now a mainstay for his country despite his tender age, the 19-year-old has the potential to make a real mark at the World Cup.

Diomande’s magic moments

What’s been said about Diomande

“He’s an incredible talent. Thanks to his raw pace, he can often breeze past opponents without even having to resort to trickery. Most importantly in my eyes, he’s a real team player and a highly effective presser.”
Leipzig tactician Ole Werner

“He’s an amazing player. When he first reported for national-team duty, we were afraid he’d be overawed and wouldn’t be able to show what he’s made of, but far from it. He was at ease from the off: it was as if he’d been part of the set-up for years! He was familiar with all his team-mates and how we go about things. When players like him – with the ability to leave opponents for dead and both score and set up goals – feel comfortable, the result is what we saw during the recent international break.”
Côte d’Ivoire coach Emerse Fae after Diomande’s stunning displays in his first two senior international appearances

“Yan Diomande is a top, top player. We’re blessed to have him, Amad Diallo and Christ Inao [Oulai]. With talents like those three in our ranks, we can rest easy! When I watch them play, I’m buzzing like a fan. You can’t help but marvel at what they’re doing at their age.”
