18 days to go…
We’re counting down to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ by showcasing a golazo from the global finals each day.
Daniel Amokachi
Greece v Nigeria
USA 1994 | Group Stage
Foxboro Stadium, Foxborough
Nigeria were one up against Greece and heading to the knockout stage of their debut FIFA World Cup™, but the Super Eagles knew another goal would propel them from third to first spot in Group D. Just 90 seconds remained to find that all-important strike, as Daniel Amokachi picked up the ball midway inside Greek territory.
The forward, surrounded by a sea of blue and white, exploded away from a wild Nikos Nioplias lunge, before side-stepping the attentions of Giannis Kalitzakis and leaving Alexandros Alexiou flat-footed. The one-man wrecking ball then let fly, powering the ball into the top-right corner, rendering goalkeeper Christos Karkamanis a bystander.
Nigeria, as it happened, were rewarded for topping the section with a last-16 battle against eventual finalists Italy. Emmanuel Amunike gave the Super Eagles the lead, only for Roberto Baggio to bag a late equaliser, before notching an extra-time winner to break Nigerian hearts.
